What you’ll make

Sew the Sonia Pants, polished trousers with a comfortable, slightly fitted silhouette that still allows ease of movement.

The design combines a front zipper fly and waistband with side pockets, belt loops, and a tie belt. An upper panel with inverted pleats creates a distinctive ruffled waist detail.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Transfer pattern markings and stabilize curved and bias edges.
  • Construct the side pockets and front shaping.
  • Install the front zipper and sew the fly.
  • Sew the back darts, crotch seams, side seams, and inseams.
  • Form the inverted pleats and assemble the waistband.
  • Make and attach the belt loops and tie belt.
  • Check the waist, leg, and length fit before hemming.

Fabric suggestions

Choose a structured fabric with a little stretch, especially for a closer fit. Options include stretch twill, ponte knit, stretch gabardine, lightweight stretch denim, and suiting with elastane.

A linen-and-elastane blend offers a lighter option. Consider fabric thickness where the pleats, belt loops, and waistband meet, since the layered areas can become bulky.

Make it your own

Test the leg fit in a similar fabric before cutting your final version. The class helps you assess the width, waistband, and length for a closer or more relaxed fit.

You may omit the pleated upper panel, tie belt, or belt loops. If you keep every feature, reposition the loops so they do not sit directly over the inverted pleats.

Complete the outfit with the London Bodysuit, Tarragona Vest, or Nancy Blazer.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers sizes 34–56, with separate lines for every size. The waist range is 64–112 cm, and the hip range is 90–138 cm.

Finished length varies by size from 102 to 107.5 cm. Check the length on your body before hemming, since the pattern allows extra length for taller wearers.

The class includes downloadable A4 and A0 pattern files and an accompanying pattern information sheet.
