It’s the season for weekend getaways and long weekends, so we designed the Venice Bag. It’s ideal for carrying the clothes and accessories you need for a couple of days, with a divided main compartment, two front pockets, carry handles, and a shoulder strap.

What you’ll make
Sew a structured weekend bag with a zippered opening, exterior zip pockets, an elastic-edged interior pocket, handles, and an adjustable shoulder strap.
Side snaps draw in the upper corners when the bag is lightly packed. Release them for additional height and capacity.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Install inset zippers in exterior pockets.
- Shape and attach the exterior and interior pockets.
- Join the exterior, lining, and main zipper.
- Create the boxed base.
- Secure handles, strap hardware, and side snap tabs.
- Make a padded removable shoulder protector.
Fabric options
Canvas is recommended for an exterior with body, while poplin works for the lining. The PDF suggests interfacing a lighter outer fabric for added structure.
The shoulder protector includes batting, and webbing forms the handles and adjustable strap.
Make it your own
Add the interior pocket to one side as demonstrated or repeat it on both sides. Quilt the shoulder protector with straight, diagonal, or grid lines.

Finished size
The PDF lists a finished size of approximately 25 cm high × 45 cm wide × 15 cm deep with the side snaps closed.
Opening the side snaps increases the approximate height to 33 cm.
