What you’ll make

Sew a roomy zip-top weekend bag that folds down small for storage or packing. Use it for a weekend trip, the gym, work, or as a lightweight extra bag in your luggage.

The design includes an exterior slip pocket, webbing handles, curved side panels, and bias-bound details. With no lining, batting, or interfacing, the finished bag stays light and easy to fold.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare and position a bias-bound exterior pocket.
  • Align webbing handles and reinforce their attachment points.
  • Finish fraying canvas edges with a zigzag stitch or serger.
  • Insert and topstitch a zipper using a zipper foot.
  • Guide bias binding around curved pieces and finish the join neatly.
  • Match side panels to the bag body and sew smooth curves.

Fabric and materials

Canvas is recommended because the bag has no lining or interfacing. It gives the simple construction enough body, although its cut edges need finishing because they can fray.

You will also use webbing for the handles, bias binding for the pocket and side details, and a zipper for the top closure.

Make it your own

Choose a canvas print or color that suits your plans for the bag. Make the exterior pocket narrower or wider, or add another pocket to the opposite panel.

Test the handle length before sewing it permanently. Adjust it for your preferred carry, or double thin webbing to give the handles more body.
