What you’ll make

Sew the Seoul Case, a circular drawstring toiletry bag that opens completely flat, keeping its contents visible and easy to reach. Pulling the cords gathers it into a compact case for storage or travel.

An interior zippered pocket keeps smaller items separate. A structured wraparound tab fastens with hook-and-loop tape to secure the gathered case and help it hold its shape.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize and turn the curved wraparound closure tab.
  • Install hook-and-loop tape with adjustable closure positions.
  • Create a clean zippered welt opening in the circular lining.
  • Build and finish the pocket behind the zipper.
  • Prepare and align two fabric channels around a circular base.
  • Join the layered circles, turn the case and thread the drawcords.

Fabric and materials

The sample uses poplin inside and out. For a firmer exterior, use canvas outside with poplin for the lining. Two layers of heavy canvas may make the case bulky and stiff.

Medium-weight interfacing supports the closure tab, with batting or lighter interfacing offered as alternatives. You will also need a zipper, cord and hook-and-loop tape.

Make it your own

Position the interior pocket where it works for you, keeping it clear of the outer seam. You can also omit the zippered pocket for a simpler version.

Use one or two soft hook-and-loop sections to accommodate different loads. Finish the cords with knots, cord locks or suitable end caps.
