What you’ll make

Sew a lined, case-style toiletry bag with a zipper, boxed base and exterior pocket protected by a rounded flap.

A fabric wrist strap with a swivel hook clips to a small side ring, making the bag easy to carry or hang within reach.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Interface the pocket and rounded flap.
  • Add a snap, button or hook-and-loop closure.
  • Shorten a zipper and finish it with fabric tabs.
  • Install the zipper through several layers.
  • Make the strap, side loop and boxed corners.
  • Turn the bag through the lining.
  • Close the lining by hand or machine.

The class builds on techniques also used in the fabric basket with divider and lid.

Structure and materials

Batting gives the bag a softer shape, while Decovil creates a firmer version. The class shows both results so you can choose the structure you prefer.

Lamifix can laminate the lining of the batting version. The instructor advises against combining it with Decovil because the rigid bag is harder to turn and may damage the Lamifix.

Make it your own

Scale the measurements proportionally for a taller, wider, squarer or more rectangular case. Change the pocket size, add another pocket or omit it.

Keep or omit the rounded flap, trim and hanging strap. The pocket can close with a snap, button or hook-and-loop tape.

Reference design

The supplied plan starts with 22 × 19 cm main panels and an 18 cm zipper. A 1 cm seam allowance is included in its listed pieces and measurements.

The video class includes a downloadable measurement sheet for the bag, pocket, flap, zipper tabs and strap components.
