Square Toiletry Bag
In today’s class, we’ll show you how to sew a square toiletry bag with plenty of room inside. It’s an intermediate-level project, but the step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process.

What you’ll make
Sew a padded square toiletry bag with a zipper that runs around most of the case, allowing the lid to open wide for easy access.
A mesh pocket inside the lid keeps smaller items visible and organized, while a webbing handle makes the bag easy to carry.
The roomy case can hold cosmetics, travel essentials, sewing supplies, medications or other small items.
This is an intermediate project with curved seams and layered components, so some previous sewing experience is recommended.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Quilt exterior fabric with batting.
- Bind mesh for an interior lid pocket.
- Reinforce and attach the webbing handle.
- Apply bias tape and install the long zipper.
- Match centers and sew layered curved seams.
- Turn the lined case and close the opening neatly.
Fabric and supplies
The demonstrated bag combines exterior fabric, lining and batting for a padded shape. It also uses mesh, bias tape, a long zipper and cotton webbing.
The exterior and lining may match or contrast. A walking foot can help feed the quilted layers evenly, although the class also demonstrates working without one.
Make it your own
Quilt parallel lines, diagonals, squares or your own design. Choose matching thread for a subtle finish or contrasting thread to emphasize the quilting.
Add fabric or cord tabs to the zipper pulls if desired. Fabric combinations and binding colors offer more ways to personalize the case.
For an easier project, try the waterproof baby toiletry bag or the Montreal toiletry bag.
The complete class covers the quilted exterior, pocket, handle, zipper, lining and final assembly. The downloadable PDF provides the pattern, measurements and material guidance.
