Thomas Duffel Backpack
In this class, I’ll show you how to sew a roomy duffel-style backpack that’s perfect for the gym or a weekend away. The pattern is included in two sizes!

What you’ll make
Sew the Thomas, a roomy duffel-style backpack for the gym, a weekend away or children’s activities. The pattern offers a large version and a smaller version that also works for adults.
A zippered main compartment holds clothing, towels and a toiletry bag. A separate lower zippered compartment keeps shoes apart, while a smaller side pocket keeps essentials within reach.
Carry it as a backpack with reinforced strap covers or use the two handles beside the main zipper to carry it like a gym bag. A carabiner provides a second closure at the top.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Install zippers in the side pocket, main opening and lower shoe compartment.
- Add webbing handles, adjustable backpack straps and reinforced strap covers.
- Divide rounded pieces into quarters and match reference points evenly.
- Sew rounded bases and shape the upper corners of the duffel.
- Secure the straps, handle and carabiner loop.
- Finish exposed interior seams with binding or overcasting if desired.
Fabric and materials
Softshell gives the bag structure, resists water and is easy to wipe clean. Because the backpack is unlined, the reverse side remains visible inside.
Other structured choices include faux leather or heavier canvas. Canvas can be interfaced, provided you are happy for the interfacing to remain visible inside.
Make it your own
Place the small zippered pocket outside for quick access or move it inside for greater protection. You can also adjust its height and choose which face of the softshell shows inside the main compartment.

Sizes
The pattern provides two sizes. The large version was designed for adults, while the smaller one was conceived for children but can also be used by an adult.
