What you’ll make

Sew the roomy, unisex Callie Backpack: a lined sack-style design with adjustable straps, a top zipper, and an interior zippered pocket.

A carabiner clips to a ring near the zipper, adding an extra step before the bag can be opened. Boxed lower corners give the backpack depth for everyday belongings.

For another adult backpack shape, compare it with the Harper Backpack.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Install a zipper between outer fabric and lining.
  • Sew and topstitch an interior zippered pocket.
  • Shape the bag with mirrored cutouts and boxed corners.
  • Reinforce the handle, straps, and lower strap rings.
  • Turn the backpack through an opening in the lining.
  • Thread adjustable straps and assemble the carabiner closure.

Fabric and structure

The sample uses canvas outside and poplin for the lining and pocket. If you choose a lighter outer fabric, the PDF recommends adding interfacing.

Match the webbing width to the sliders, rings, and carabiner. The sample uses 2 cm backpack webbing.

Make it your own

  • Resize the interior pocket for a phone, keys, or wallet.
  • Finish the pocket without a zipper, add another closure, or leave it out.
  • Attach the carabiner from below with the ring near the zipper, as taught in class.
  • Reverse the arrangement by placing the carabiner near the zipper and the ring below.

Pattern measurements

The PDF specifies four main pieces measuring 50 × 50 cm: two in outer fabric and two in lining. The interior pocket piece measures 15 × 22 cm.

The class includes the full construction demonstration and a PDF with a cutting guide, fabric guidance, and a hardware overview.
