What you’ll make
Sew a backpack for roller skates or ice skates, with room for the skates and accessories such as gloves, clothing, or a cleaning cloth.
The exterior has a zippered side pocket for small valuables and a front mesh pocket for a water bottle or another quick-access item.
A padded back and adjustable shoulder straps support comfortable carrying. Metal bag feet lift the base from the ground, while a removable rigid insert adds stability.

- Choose interfacing for the fabric and desired structure.

- Make a bound mesh pocket and a zippered side pocket.
- Insert the main zipper between exterior and lining sections.
- Install bag feet and prepare the removable rigid base.
- Assemble curved panels while managing bulky layers.
- Thread and secure the adjustable shoulder straps.
Fabric and structure
The design uses exterior and lining fabrics, medium-weight interfacing, batting for the back and straps, mesh, binding, backpack webbing, zippers, and bag hardware.
A corrugated polypropylene sheet forms the removable, wipe-clean base. Cardboard is a supported substitute, although it will need periodic replacement.
The back panel is padded for carrying comfort. Adjust the interfacing weight to suit the main fabric and the amount of structure you want.
Make it your own
Add another zippered side pocket by repeating the demonstrated pocket. Make the front pocket in mesh or another fabric, then finish it with binding or a hem.
Add a second slider to a continuous main zipper. If the backpack will hold frequently used skates, several eyelets on each side can provide ventilation.
Quilt the padded back with straight, horizontal, or diagonal lines. The inner bag-foot hardware can be concealed between layers by installing it earlier.
Finished size
The backpack is approximately 39 cm high, with a base measuring 30 cm wide by 22 cm deep.
