Nathan Anti-Theft Backpack
In this class, you’ll learn how to sew an anti-theft backpack we’ve named Nathan. It features a main exterior zippered compartment and a smaller exterior pocket, both positioned against your back when you wear the backpack.

What you’ll make
Sew the Nathan, a lined backpack whose zipper openings sit against your back when worn, making the contents less accessible from behind. The outward-facing panel has no exposed pockets.
A large zipper opens along one side and part of the top, leading to a roomy compartment for a laptop, books or notebooks. A smaller back-facing zippered pocket keeps a phone, keys or wallet close.
Inside, an additional patch pocket organizes pens and other small accessories. Padded, adjustable shoulder straps and a centered hanging loop complete the design.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize and finish curved woven edges before assembly.
- Sew padded shoulder straps and attach adjustable webbing.
- Install a zipper around a curved opening with lining.
- Add an interior patch pocket where it remains easy to reach.
- Assemble the structured exterior and lining.
- Secure load-bearing strap points and close the lining opening.
Fabric and materials
The sample pairs gray twill outside with a printed poplin lining. Canvas is another structured exterior option, with edge finishing to control fraying.
Batting adds body and padding, but avoid very thick or rigid batting in the shoulder straps. If your machine struggles with bulky layers, use interfacing or make the straps from webbing alone.
Make it your own
Choose the direction in which the main zipper opens, and position the interior pocket where it will be easiest to reach. Optional topstitching or quilted lines can add definition to the padded straps.

Finished size
The finished Nathan measures approximately 35 cm high by 26 cm wide by 6.5 cm deep.
