What you’ll make

Make comfortable, high-rise jogger pants with exterior pockets, an elastic waist and fitted ankle cuffs.

The waistband can include a drawstring for extra adjustment or decoration. Separate men’s and women’s patterns provide the same core jogger design.

Designed for stretch fabric, the pants work for exercise, relaxed everyday wear or a more polished look in a dressier elastic fabric.

This easy garment project introduces useful techniques for sewing knits and elastic-waist clothing.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut mirrored garment and pocket pieces correctly.
  • Attach the exterior pockets with optional twin-needle topstitching.
  • Construct the legs and crotch with stretch-friendly seams.
  • Distribute rib-knit cuffs evenly around the ankles.
  • Make stabilized buttonholes for an optional drawstring.
  • Install waistband elastic without twisting it.

Fabric and notions

Choose a knit or another fabric with enough stretch for comfortable movement. Rib knit is used for the waistband and ankle cuffs in the demonstrated version.

You will also need 4 cm elastic for the waist and, if desired, cord or tape for the drawstring. Finish the seams with a serger or a sewing-machine zigzag.

Make it your own

Use matching ribbing for a streamlined look or contrast the waistband and cuffs. The drawstring and its buttonholes are optional.

For a straight-leg finish, add the needed length before cutting and replace the ankle cuffs with hems.

The rise can also be lowered. Check the paper pattern against the wearer first, then adjust the waistband to match the altered waistline.

Pattern sizes and fit

Both the men’s and women’s patterns cover sizes 36–52. The included charts and notes provide measurements and fabric guidance by size.

Check the leg length before cutting, especially for a taller or shorter wearer. Test the elastic around the wearer because stretch and firmness can vary.

The complete class covers pockets, stretch seams, cuffs, waistband elastic and the optional drawstring. Downloadable men’s and women’s patterns are included.
