What you’ll make

Sew a short-sleeved Honolulu Kids’ Shirt with a casual, vacation-inspired look. The design has a collar, front facings, a button closure and an optional curved patch pocket.

The intended fit is not oversized. Turned-up sleeve cuffs create the casual version shown, while a standard inward hem and a collar button give the same pattern a dressier finish.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize curves and front facings so woven fabric keeps its shape.
  • Shape and topstitch an optional curved patch pocket.
  • Construct the collar and finish it with the facings.
  • Ease each sleeve cap and match the correct sleeve to its armhole.
  • Finish the shirt and sleeves with casual or conventional hems.
  • Test, mark and sew the front buttonholes and buttons.

Fabric and materials

Poplin gives the shirt a light, crisp result. Other supported choices include lightweight denim, linen, rustic cotton and double gauze.

A knit creates a different look but requires a ballpoint needle and suitable machine settings. Lightweight fabric may benefit from interfacing at the front facings to support the buttonholes.

Make it your own

Add one pocket, two pockets or leave them off. Use the marked placement or position the pockets to suit your design.

Buttons and buttonholes create the classic finish, but snaps are an alternative. On a stretchy knit version that passes over the head, you can use snaps with decorative buttons.

Complete the outfit with Jason Shorts, Lucas Shorts or the longer Pekín Pants.

Pattern sizing

The pattern includes grouped sizes from 18/24 months through 12/13 years, corresponding to listed heights from 86 cm to 152 cm.
