What you’ll make
Sew the Jason Shorts, a comfortable pair of children’s shorts with an elastic waist and practical front pockets. Optional back patch pockets offer extra room for small finds.
The sample also features eyelets and a decorative waist drawstring. Both details can be omitted for a simpler finish.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored pieces and transfer pattern notches.
- Stabilize curves and bias-cut areas.
- Prepare and reinforce optional back patch pockets.
- Construct the curved front pockets.
- Assemble and finish the shorts.
- Sew an elastic casing and insert the elastic.
Fabric options
The sample uses cotton chambray, a woven fabric with a linen-like look. Linen or denim can also create a more structured version.
For a sportier style, choose a knit with some body, such as French terry. Adapt the finishing and stabilization to the fabric.
Make it your own
Leave off the back pockets, change their placement, or add decorative topstitching. You can also skip the eyelets and drawstring while retaining the elastic waist.
Pair the shorts with the Mark Tank Top or Basic Kids’ T-Shirt.
For another playful pairing, try the Lexie Tank Top.

The included pattern covers ages 4/5 through 14/15.
