What you’ll make
Sew polished children’s pants with a zip fly, buttoned waistband, slanted front pockets and functional back welt pockets. Optional belt loops complete the tailored look.
Buttonhole elastic hidden inside the waistband lets you adjust the waist after choosing a size that accommodates the child’s hips.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Mark and sew functional back welt pockets.
- Construct slanted front pockets and pocket bags.
- Install a zip fly and its supporting pieces.
- Assemble the legs and crotch seam.
- Add buttonhole elastic inside the waistband.
- Sew optional belt loops and an enclosed hem.
Fabric suggestions
Use a woven fabric suitable for trousers. The class sample is linen; lightweight denim, cotton twill and chambray are also discussed.
Fabric weight affects the bulk around the pockets, fly and waistband, so test your needle and stitching on a layered scrap first.
Make it your own
Make full-length or Bermuda-length pants. You can also compare the desired length with a well-fitting pair and adjust the pattern before cutting.

Choosing a size
Sizes run from 18/24 months through 12/13 years, corresponding to listed heights from 86 to 152 cm.
Compare the child’s waist, hips and height. If the hips fall in a larger size, select for the hips and use the internal elastic to refine the waist.
