What you’ll make
Sew pull-on children’s shorts with an elastic waistband and two side pockets. The downloadable pattern covers babies through young children and is designed for comfortable summer play.
The sample combines heather gray rib knit with contrasting red jersey pockets, but the shorts can also be made from woven fabric.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored front and back leg pieces correctly.
- Sew stretch fabric with suitable tools and stitches.
- Prepare and attach contrasting patch pockets.
- Assemble the legs and curved crotch seam.
- Make a waistband casing and insert elastic.
- Finish knit hems with a twin needle.
Fabric and supplies
The sample uses rib knit for the shorts and jersey knit for the pockets. Woven fabric is also an option.
For stretch fabric, use a ballpoint or jersey needle and follow the marked grain direction. The waistband is designed for 3 cm elastic.
Make it your own
Sew the shorts with or without pockets, add a back pocket, or shorten the legs. Add elastic at the leg hems for a bloomer-style variation.
Leave knit pocket edges raw for a casual look or turn them under for a cleaner finish. Contrasting thread can highlight the pocket and twin-needle stitching.
Sizing
The downloadable pattern runs from 3–6 months through 5–6 years. Select and trace the required size before cutting the mirrored pieces.
