Easter vacation is here! In some regions it started this Monday, while in others it will still take a couple of days. If you have a few days off and are planning to travel, you're going to love today's sewing ideas: five ways to make a beautiful travel document holder.

There's something for every taste, from the simplest one in the world to genuine organizational wonders with lots of pockets and compartments. You can use these ideas as a reference for developing your own design or sew along with Laura, who is a fabulous teacher.

Some of the tutorials are from Lulu Ferris, and others are on our YouTube channel. If you've just arrived and don't know what Lulu Ferris is or how it works, we explain everything here in 13 questions and answers.

Ready? Let's get to them!

5 ways to make a travel document holder

travel sewing document holder

1. Book-style document holder with an elastic closure

If you know us even a little, you'll recognize this wonder. It's one of our signature products, and we've spent a long time creating and perfecting it. Maybe because we're a little disorganized and need help staying organized.

If you'd like to make a document holder like this one, we can help you in two ways:

  • Video tutorial in Lulu Ferris:
Make it step by step with Laura. Download the pattern and enjoy a 19-minute class covering the entire process. In this tutorial, we used waterproof fabric to keep the documents safe and protected.
  • Document-holder sewing kit:
Buy a little box with all the materials already cut: ready to open and start sewing. Inside, you'll also find instructions and step-by-step photos.

2. Envelope-style document holder with compartments

A different design, but just as practical. It's very easy to make and highly customizable. In this case, the secret is the bias binding, which gives it structure and its design touch.

It also has several inside pockets and a zipper to keep everything in its place, so you don't have to take out the whole stack of papers every time you need something.

The tutorial for the envelope-style document holder is also in Lulu Ferris: you can see more details and photos here.

3. Basic fabric envelope

A simple, complication-free option that you can find on our YouTube channel. In this case, it's a fabric envelope with bias binding that closes with a snap. There are no interior compartments or zippers, which has its pros and cons: less interior organization, but super easy to sew.

Here's the link to make the fabric envelope on YouTube.

4. Passport cover

Maybe you're one of those digital, minimalist travelers who barely carry any papers. It's true that you can now keep all your codes and reservations on your cell phone. But the one thing you still can't carry digitally is your passport.

If that's your case, we have another beautiful and very easy tutorial for you: a cover that lets your passport travel well protected and looking elegant.

You can learn to make the passport cover on our YouTube channel. Don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date with the latest news ;)

travel document holder booklet

5. Booklet-style document holder

But it's not all about plane tickets or lodging reservations. When we travel, and especially when we travel with little ones, medical documents are extremely important. That's why we thought it was essential to add a pediatrician's booklet cover to the list.

And not just for the kids: also for ourselves and our best furry friends. That way, you can carry the whole family's documents in the same place or have a cover for each one personalized with their name.

Access the booklet-cover tutorial here in Lulu Ferris.

And now we're ready to travel with our travel document holders. Happy vacation!
