What you’ll make

Sew the Vienna Cardigan, a hooded layer for babies and young children with optional animal ears and side-seam pockets.

The front can close with snaps or with buttons and buttonholes. The ears add playful detail but can be omitted for a simpler hood.

Build an outfit with the leggings or loose-fit top.

Another option is the basic kids’ T-shirt.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare mirrored pieces, notches and closure areas.
  • Sew and turn the optional ears, then position them in the paneled hood.
  • Assemble and hem the hood before attaching it to the neckline.
  • Join the shoulders and set the sleeves by matching notches.
  • Construct optional pockets while closing the sleeves and body.
  • Finish the lower edge and cuffs, then add the chosen closures.

Fabric choices

The samples use warm knit fabric and velour. French terry and microcorduroy are also suggested.

Woven options include denim, canvas and softshell. Use a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle for knits and a universal needle for woven fabrics.

Make it your own

  • Make the hood with or without ears.
  • Leave off the pockets in small sizes or to reduce bulky layers.
  • Choose buttons and buttonholes or snaps.
  • Add elastic at the cuffs for a closer finish.
  • Use a deep sleeve hem that can be released as the child grows.

Pattern sizing

The pattern includes sizes 6/9, 9/12, 12/18 and 18/24 months, followed by 2/3, 3/4 and 4/5 years.

The height chart spans 71–110 cm, with chest measurements from 48–57 cm.

The video class includes downloadable A4 and A0 patterns and a pattern information sheet.
