What you’ll make

Sew stretch leggings for women, children or diapered babies. The dedicated baby pattern has a longer rise for diaper room, while the other versions provide a standard leggings fit.

The design has no outer-leg side seam. A folded elastic waistband and twin-needle hems create a clean, flexible finish for everyday wear.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Select and cut the correct mirrored pattern pieces.
  • Keep directional prints upright during layout.
  • Use a ballpoint stretch needle and a walking foot when helpful.
  • Join the inseams and sew the crotch seam.
  • Finish stretch seams with a serger, overcasting foot or zigzag.
  • Quarter, stretch and attach waistband elastic evenly.
  • Use a twin needle for the waistband and ankle hems.

Fabric and notions

Use knit fabric with enough stretch for close-fitting leggings, plus elastic for the waistband. The demonstration uses a stretch or jersey ballpoint needle.

A walking foot can help feed the layers evenly. Without a serger, use the demonstrated zigzag stitch or overcasting foot to retain stretch at the seams.

Make it your own

The women’s pattern has a high rise, which can be lowered before cutting. Choose different prints or sew coordinating leggings for adults and children.

Build matching outfits with the flared dress, sleeveless kids’ T-shirt or raglan sweatshirt.

Pattern ranges

The four groups cover diapered babies from 0 to 2/3 years, children from 12/18 months to 5/6 years, children from 6/7 to 12/13 years, and women in sizes S–XL.

The class teaches one shared construction method, supported by four downloadable PDFs for the baby, children’s and women’s ranges.
