What you’ll make

Create a zippered vertical case that stands upright and becomes an accessible holder when its upper section slides down.

Use it for pens, pencils, sewing tools, cosmetics, or other small items. An inner pocket can be divided to keep selected pieces upright and easy to find.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize the lining and sliding upper section.
  • Create customizable dividers inside the lining.
  • Install the zipper between the exterior and lining.
  • Box the corners to form the case’s depth.
  • Construct and attach the sliding section.
  • Add a firm insert to support the base.
  • Finish the zipper end with a fabric stop.

Fabric and supplies

The project uses exterior fabric, lining, a zipper, fusible interfacing, and a firm base insert.

A sewable plastic insert is demonstrated for the base. You can substitute another firm material, but test whether your machine can stitch through it before assembly.

Make it your own

Add the pocket to one or both lining walls. Leave it undivided, split it in half, or create narrower sections for the tools you carry.

Pattern sizes

The printable pattern includes a standard case and a smaller version.

This easy class breaks down the unusual sliding structure, including the zipper, boxed base, support insert, and finishing stop.
