What you’ll make

Sew a structured half-moon case with a curved zipper, full lining, a large interior pocket and an elastic organizer on the opposite side.

The sample is a sewing kit for scissors, markers, rotary cutters and other tools. The same case can organize toiletries, first-aid items, school supplies or cables.

Batting gives the case body, while fabric zipper stops and a lined construction create a clean finish inside and out.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Interface an interior pocket and finish its upper edge.
  • Divide elastic into loops for the objects you plan to carry.
  • Shorten a zipper and finish its ends with fabric stops.
  • Clip and pin zipper tape smoothly around a curve.
  • Sew the lining, batting and exterior in controlled stages.
  • Reduce bulk, clip curves and turn through the lining.

Fabric and structure

Choose exterior and lining fabrics, then add batting for structure. Reinforce the interior fabric pocket with fusible interfacing.

You will also need a zipper, elastic and bias tape. Water-soluble fabric glue is optional, while plenty of pins help control the curved zipper.

Make it your own

Adjust the elastic divisions to suit your tools. The class also supports using one or two elastic strips and placing them horizontally or vertically.

Finish the pocket with bias tape or a folded hem. Contrasting lining, zipper stops and binding can make the interior layout easier to see.

The video class includes a downloadable pattern with the half-moon base and interior pocket layout.
