What you’ll make

Sew a lined drawstring backpack with a curved flap, adjustable webbing straps and a cord lock. Interfacing gives the fabric body and flap additional support.

The demonstrated size is intended for children. For an adult version, the source suggests adapting the dimensions and lengthening the straps.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Fuse interfacing to the exterior pieces.
  • Shape, sew and turn a rounded flap.
  • Make triangular anchors for the lower straps.
  • Assemble the exterior and lining.
  • Add a casing without blocking the cord openings.
  • Secure the upper webbing through thick layers.
  • Thread the strap adjusters, cord and cord lock.

Materials and structure

The backpack uses exterior fabric, lining and fusible interfacing, plus sturdy webbing, two strap adjusters, cord and a cord lock.

A walking foot and suitable needle can help when securing the thick webbing at the top. Finish the upper seam with a zigzag or serger for added durability.

Make it your own

Mix coordinated fabrics, add contrast topstitching around the flap or decorate it with a name, kraft-tex, lace or pom-pom trim.

Leave the flap loose or add hook-and-loop tape or a snap. The class identifies hook-and-loop tape as the more practical added closure for children.

Verified pattern details

The PDF uses 35 x 35 cm exterior and lining body pieces and a 20 x 24 cm flap.

The video class includes a downloadable PDF with cutting measurements, material information and the triangular side-piece template.
