What you’ll make

Sew the Tuck, an unlined fanny pack available in adult and child sizes. Its pouch closes with a drawcord, then a shaped flap fastens over the opening with snaps.

A channel on the back holds an adjustable waist strap with a side-release buckle.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Finish raw edges according to whether the fabric frays.
  • Build and position the back strap channel.
  • Shape and topstitch the flap.
  • Make a drawcord casing with eyelets or buttonholes.
  • Box the lower corners for depth.
  • Bind the opening and install the cord, buckle, slider, and snaps.

Fabric and structure

Choose a fabric with body, such as canvas, thin faux leather, or waterproof polyester. The sample’s polyester is easy to wipe clean and helps protect the contents from rain.

Light poplin or quilting cotton will need interfacing to hold the same shape. Because the pack is unlined, added interfacing may remain visible inside.

Make it your own

Use eyelets or buttonholes for the cord, add a cord lock and end caps, or simply tie the cord. The flap corners can be rounded or square.

The waterproof sample reuses scraps from the anti-sand beach backpack.

Two useful sizes

The PDF provides separate cutting dimensions for child and adult versions. Choose the capacity you prefer and adjust the waist strap to fit the wearer.

The video demonstrates the casing, binding, flap, strap channel, and hardware installation. The downloadable PDF contains both size sets and the materials list.
