What you’ll make
Sew a child-size drawstring backpack for beach or playground toys. Mesh at the front and base lets loose sand fall out instead of collecting inside.
The waterproof back and pocket are practical around water, while the cords close the top when pulled from both sides.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Finish fray-prone waterproof fabric.
- Bind and attach a pocket to mesh.
- Join the wider back panel to the mesh front.
- Match quarter points and sew a circular mesh base.
- Create the cord channels and thread the closure.
- Reinforce the webbing loop and straps.
Choosing your fabric
The featured version combines waterproof polyester or nylon with polyester mesh. Mesh at the front and circular base creates the sand-shedding effect.
Make it your own
Use the backpack for beach toys, park toys, or other play gear. The child-size design suits ages 3–4 and up, and the source suggests enlarging it for an adult version.
