What you’ll make

Create a fold-up travel organizer for underwear, swimwear, socks, and other small garments. Its varied compartments keep the contents visible, separated, and easy to unpack together.

It combines a zippered mesh pocket, divided pockets for smaller pieces, and a roomy gathered pocket with an elastic top for larger garments.

Elastic straps and snaps close the organizer. Snaps along the spine provide extra capacity when needed, while an optional handle lets you hang it from a hanger or another convenient spot.

What you’ll learn in this class

Install a zipper on mesh and finish the edge with binding.
Shape divided pockets with pleats or gathers.
Sew an elastic casing and gathered pocket.
Support the outer panels with batting or stabilizer.
Align pockets and closures while joining the layers.
Add elastic tabs, snaps, and a hanging handle.

Fabric and supplies

Choose poplin, quilting cotton, or lightweight canvas rather than a heavy fabric. Combine different exterior and interior fabrics or use the same fabric throughout.

You’ll also work with mesh or clear vinyl, a zipper, binding, elastic, and snaps. Batting, stabilizer, or interfacing can give the main panels more body.

Make it your own

Repeat the pocket style you expect to use most, change the dividers, or make both sides alike. Arrange the lower fullness with gathers or pleats.

Finished measurements

Folded, the organizer measures approximately 23 cm wide × 33 cm high. Open, it measures approximately 53 cm wide × 33 cm high.
