What you’ll make

Sew a close-fitting stretch cover drafted for your suitcase. It leaves access for the wheels, carrying handle, and telescoping handle, then closes underneath with Velcro.

A distinctive print makes luggage easier to recognize. The removable cover also helps shield the suitcase from scratches and can be washed when it gets dirty.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Measure the suitcase’s height and width circumferences.
  • Draft a folded pattern with negative ease.
  • Position the wheel and handle openings.
  • Sew highly elastic fabric while preserving stretch.
  • Face the openings and shape the lower corners.
  • Fit and attach the Velcro closure.

Fabric and supplies

Use a highly elastic fabric; the class recommends Lycra. A stretch or ballpoint needle is used for construction, and Velcro secures the cover beneath the suitcase.

The fabric must stretch comfortably around the case, so the worksheet builds negative ease into the custom pattern.

Make it your own

Select a bold print for quick identification. Position the handle opening, wheel cutouts, and lower shaping to match your suitcase.

Make a matching waterproof document holder with an elastic closure.

Another travel option is the travel document holder with snaps and bias binding.

Custom fit

This is a made-to-measure project rather than a fixed-size cover. The PDF worksheet records the case circumferences, wheel spacing, and telescoping-handle opening.
