Toulouse Beret (Adult and Child)
In this class, you’ll learn how to sew a reversible beret—an incredibly easy project with a super-chic result. A pattern in sizes from 18 months through adult is included!

What you’ll make
Sew a Toulouse Beret for a child or adult. The featured version is reversible, giving you two coordinated looks in one winter accessory.
You can instead use a lightweight lining beneath the outer fabric or make a single-layer beret. An optional pom-pom or small self-fabric stem finishes the crown.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Select a size for the wearer’s head circumference.
- Cut the full circles and inner openings.
- Join curved sections while matching quarter marks.
- Clip the curves for smooth turning.
- Assemble two layers through a turning opening.
- Topstitch the lower edge and close the opening.
Fabric suggestions
Use at least one warm fabric with enough body to hold the beret’s shape. Suggestions include wool coating, corduroy, fine-wale corduroy, bouclé, or another structured winter fabric.
For a lined rather than reversible beret, the inner layer can be lighter, such as satin or poplin. A walking foot can help with bulky layers.
Make it your own
Make the beret reversible, add a conventional lining, or leave it unlined. Finish the crown with a pom-pom, covered button, short fabric stem, or no decoration.
