What you’ll make

The Taylor Belt Bag has a roomy zippered main compartment and a second zippered pocket set on the diagonal.

Organizer pockets inside the compartments separate larger belongings from cards, pens, and other small essentials.

An adjustable webbing strap with a buckle and slider lets you wear the bag around your waist or over your shoulder.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Install the main and diagonal zippers between the outer fabric and lining.
  • Topstitch beside a zipper so the lining stays clear.
  • Sew and divide internal organizer pockets.
  • Match and sew the shaped bag panels.
  • Secure the webbing and assemble the adjustable strap.

This project is best suited to sewists with some experience handling zippers and multiple fabric layers.

Fabric and structure

The tutorial uses canvas for the exterior and also discusses pairing canvas outer fabric with a canvas lining.

Choose light or medium-weight interfacing according to the fabric and the body you want. Batting is another option, and selected panels may be left uninterfaced for a softer result.

Make it your own

Vary the interfacing by panel for a softer or firmer finish. You can also choose which direction each zipper opens before sewing it in place.
