What you’ll make

Sew the Santander, a stretch-knit baby sweatshirt with a snap opening at one shoulder, making the neckline easier to open when dressing your little one.

The design has long sleeves, cuffs, a neckband, a waistband, and an optional kangaroo pocket. Add ruffles at the pocket openings, over the sleeve caps, or leave them off.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Gather and attach pocket or shoulder ruffles.
  • Position and sew a kangaroo pocket.
  • Attach cuffs, a neckband, and a waistband.
  • Assemble an overlapping shoulder opening and add snaps.
  • Match sleeve notches without distorting the knit.
  • Finish seams with a serger, zigzag, or stretch stitch.

Fabric and sewing setup

Choose a stretch knit such as sweatshirt fabric, French terry, brushed French terry, or jersey for a lighter, T-shirt-style version. Woven fabric is not suitable.

Use a ballpoint, jersey, stretch, or super-stretch needle. A walking foot or roller foot can help feed the fabric without unwanted stretching.

Make it your own

Add both ruffle details, choose only the pocket or shoulder ruffles, omit every ruffle, or leave off the kangaroo pocket. A button and buttonhole can replace the snaps.

For a coordinated look, try the raglan sweatshirt or oversized unisex sweatshirt.

You can also sew the Riley Dress.

Complete a baby outfit with the drop-crotch pants or jogger sweatpants.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers 0/3, 3/6, 6/9, 9/12, 12/18, and 18/24 months. Charted heights range from 62 cm for the smallest size to 86 cm for the largest.
