What you’ll make
Sew relaxed drop-crotch pants for babies and children, with a roomy body, tall foldable waistband and long ankle cuffs.
The pattern runs from 0/3 months through 5/6 years. The waistband and cuffs can be worn folded or left long for adaptable coverage as a child grows.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Identify the front and back pattern pieces.
- Cut on the fold with the grainline correctly aligned.
- Set up a machine for sewing knit fabric.
- Sew the side seams and curved rise.
- Construct and evenly attach folded stretch bands.
- Sew optional decorative buttons by machine.
Fabric choices
The pants body can be made from woven cotton or knit fabric. The demonstrated pair uses knit throughout.
The waistband and ankle cuffs must contain elastane so they recover, fit comfortably and pass over the feet. A walking foot can help feed the knit evenly.
Make it your own
Wear the tall waistband extended or folded in half. Fold the long cuffs up, then unfold them after a growth spurt.
Add the decorative buttons shown in class or leave the front plain.

Make an adult version with the women’s harem pants tutorial.
The buttons also appear on the Maxine loose-fit overalls.
Pattern sizes
The pattern runs from 0/3 months through 5/6 years and includes three waistband measurements for the corresponding sizes.
The video demonstrates knit handling and both serger and zigzag seam finishes. A downloadable PDF pattern provides the front and back pieces.
