What you’ll make

Sew relaxed harem pants with a pronounced dropped crotch, curved front pockets, a wide waistband, and elasticated ankles.

The loose, unisex shape allows easy movement. The waistband can sit below the belly, and the pants work for yoga, lounging, or casual outfits.

The adult pattern spans six grouped sizes and is available in home-printer and copy-shop formats.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut the front, back, pocket, and waistband pieces.
  • Cut paired pocket pieces in mirror image.
  • Construct curved inset pockets.
  • Sew knit with a zigzag finish or serger.
  • Join the leg and dropped-crotch seams.
  • Fit and stabilize the elasticated waistband.
  • Sew ankle casings and insert elastic.

Fabric choices

The sample uses a heavier knit for a warmer fall or winter version. A lighter fabric with drape, such as viscose, is suggested for spring and summer.

For knit fabric, use a ballpoint or jersey needle. A walking foot can improve feeding, and the edges can be finished with a zigzag or serger.

Make it your own

The sample has a deep dropped crotch. Raise the crotch curve on the pattern if you prefer a less exaggerated silhouette.

Choose ankle and waistband elastic according to its stretch, strength, and your preferred fit.

If the waistband fabric is sufficiently stretchy and supportive, the class notes that waist elastic may not be necessary. Test the fabric before deciding.
