What you’ll make

Sew a classic unisex knit sweatshirt with rib-knit cuffs and a waistband. Choose a hood or a simple neckband, and add the kangaroo pocket if desired.

Related projects include a kids’ and women’s sweatshirt, basic men’s T-shirt, and unisex boxer briefs.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Prepare and topstitch a kangaroo pocket.
  • Sew and finish knit seams.
  • Set the sleeves before closing the side seams.
  • Distribute rib-knit cuffs and the waistband evenly.
  • Construct and attach the unlined hood.
  • Use a twin needle for knit topstitching.

Choosing your fabric

The featured sweatshirt uses French terry with coordinating rib knit for the cuffs and waistband. Use a ballpoint needle suitable for knit fabrics.

Make it your own

Choose the hood or neckband version. For a lined hood, cut a second mirrored pair of hood pieces.

Skip the kangaroo pocket, replace it with a small contrast chest pocket, or use coordinating fabric for the sleeves and pocket.

Sizing

The pattern covers S–XXL. Its chart provides chest, waist, and hip measurements to help you choose a size.

The class demonstrates the hooded version from pocket preparation through cuffs and waistband, while also explaining the neckband option.
