What you’ll make
Sew the Richard, a men’s pullover with a V-neck, long sleeves, cuffs and a hem band. An optional patch pocket adds a practical detail at the chest.
The simple silhouette can read as a sweater in a knit fabric or take on a sportier sweatshirt look in fleece-backed or lightweight sweatshirt fabric.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose stitches and a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle for knit fabric.
- Sew an optional chest patch pocket with clean topstitching.
- Join shoulder and sleeve seams while matching pattern notches.
- Attach and shape a stretch neckband into a defined V-neck.
- Sew stretch seams with an overlocker, zigzag or stretch stitch.
- Attach cuffs and the hem band with even stretch.
Fabric and materials
Choose a knit with elastane and some stretch. The sample uses a turquoise knit; sweatshirt knits can create a more casual version, including lightweight or warmer fleece-backed options.
Test your chosen stretch stitch on a fabric scrap before sewing. Select a ballpoint, jersey, stretch or super-stretch needle to suit the specific knit.
Make it your own
Leave off the chest pocket for a cleaner front. You can also omit the sleeve cuffs or hem band by lengthening the corresponding pattern pieces and finishing the edges with standard hems.
For a coordinated casual set, add the Owen Joggers. For a hood and kangaroo pocket, try the Unisex Sweatshirt.
