What you’ll make

Sew a padded carrier bag for a small dog, cat, or other small pet. The finished bag measures approximately 35 cm wide, 28 cm high, and 22 cm deep.

The carrier has two exterior pockets, a long shoulder strap, an optional shoulder pad, an internal tether with a snap hook, and an optional padded cushion.

Use metal snaps so the sides can open and the carrier can serve as a small bed, or sew the sides closed for a fixed bag shape.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Quilt the outer fabric to batting and join it to the lining.
  • Shape the base and sides of a large padded piece.
  • Prepare and position two exterior pockets.
  • Attach webbing to form the supporting shoulder strap.
  • Make an adjustable internal tether with a snap hook.
  • Finish the sides with strong metal snaps or fixed seams.
  • Sew the optional cushion for the standard carrier.

Fabric suggestions

The sample uses sturdy canvas-like fabric inside and out with batting. Other suitable options include twill, canvas, lightweight softshell, and denim.

For a softer interior, use cotton or another soft woven lining. A walking foot or roller foot can help feed the quilted layers evenly.

Make it your own

The class explains how to lengthen the carrier for a longer pet or increase its width. Because the main piece is cut on the fold, added width is doubled across the finished bag.

Use different fabrics inside and out, omit either pocket, adjust the pocket capacity, or add short hand straps alongside the long shoulder strap.

For a directional print, divide the fold-line piece and add seam allowance so the motif remains upright on both sides.

Complete your set with the dog harness, adjustable collar, or dog coat.

You can also sew the Finn Dog-Walking Belt Bag or a coordinating pet bed.

Finished size

The standard carrier is approximately 35 × 28 × 22 cm. The optional cushion uses two 22.5 × 35 cm pieces; adjust the cushion if you resize the carrier.

Measure your pet before using or modifying the standard pattern. This project is intended for small pets that can be carried comfortably in a shoulder bag.

The class includes a downloadable A4 pattern for the standard carrier.
