What you’ll make

Sew the New York Dress, a close-fitting stretch dress with long sleeves, a defined waist and a knotted front.

The short skirt has two layers and is secured inside at one side. An open neckline and fitted sleeves complete the silhouette, while the stretch construction eliminates the need for a zipper.

Pair it with the Vigo Blazer and the Versailles Bag.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Choose a size with particular attention to the waist measurement.
  • Prepare and sew stretch fabric with suitable stitches or a serger.
  • Arrange the overlapping fronts to form the waist knot and layered skirt.
  • Finish the neckline with a facing and join the shoulders cleanly.
  • Set in the sleeves, align the side seams and finish the hems and cuffs.
  • Use an elastic machine stitch when a serger is unavailable.

Fabric and sewing setup

Use stretch fabric because the dress is fitted and has no zipper. The samples use stretch velvet and sparkly knits.

The class uses a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle, with a straight stitch followed by serging. If you do not have a serger, use an elastic stitch on your sewing machine.

Make it your own

  • Shorten the sleeves instead of making the full-length version.
  • Secure the neckline with an inconspicuous hand stitch for more coverage.
  • Add a brooch at the neckline as a decorative closure.
  • Add optional shoulder pads, covered in the dress fabric if desired.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans bust measurements of 86–132 cm, waists of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm.

Finished dress lengths range from 88 cm in size 34/36 to 95.5 cm in size 54/56.

The video class includes downloadable A4 and A0 pattern files and a pattern information sheet.
