What you’ll make

Sew the Versailles Bag, a compact lined bag for carrying a few essentials. Its boxed base adds a little depth, while an interior patch pocket keeps smaller belongings easy to reach.

A shaped flap closes with a magnetic snap. Add a chain to carry it as a bag, omit the chain for a clutch or attach it with swivel clasps to switch between both styles.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Back selected pieces with batting and align shifting layers.
  • Prepare and attach a neat interior patch pocket.
  • Mark and install both halves of a magnetic snap.
  • Sew, trim and turn the shaped flap for a clean edge.
  • Create optional boxed corners in the outer bag and lining.
  • Insert the flap and strap rings, then turn the bag through the lining.

Fabric and materials

Poplin, cotton or canvas makes the project straightforward. Satin creates a dressier result but shifts more while sewing. Sequined fabric requires slower handling and careful trimming to reduce bulk.

Selected outer and flap pieces are backed with batting. The design also uses lining, a magnetic snap and rings for attaching a chain or another strap.

Make it your own

Skip the boxed corners for a flat clutch, or include them for the documented 2.5 cm depth. A fabric strap can replace the chain, and swivel clasps make either option removable.

Use a stable woven for an everyday bag or choose satin and sequins for an occasion version.

Compare the Bárbara Bag, Sloan Bag and Drawstring Bag.

Finished size

The finished Versailles Bag measures approximately 21 cm wide, 15 cm high and 2.5 cm deep.

The video class includes printable A4 pattern pieces for the main bag and flap.
