What you’ll make
Sew the Sloan, a compact lined bag with a softly structured fold-over shape. The sample is quilted with diagonal lines and finished with a metal zipper.
A magnetic snap holds the folded front in place. An interior slip pocket organizes small items, and a chain lets you carry the bag on your shoulder.
Leave off the chain to carry the design as a clutch.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Mark and sew a geometric quilting design over batting.
- Add fabric stops and install a zipper.
- Position a slip pocket on a slippery lining.
- Join the exterior, zipper, and lining cleanly.
- Keep the lining away from the zipper teeth.
- Install a magnetic snap through the exterior and batting.
- Make reinforced chain tabs and turn the lined bag.
Fabric and materials
The sample pairs a soft, cashmere-like outer fabric and batting with a viscose lining. The lesson addresses both thick quilted areas and a slippery, fray-prone lining.
You will also work with a zipper, magnetic snap, and chain. A zipper foot helps near the teeth, while soluble fabric glue or pins can stabilize the lining.
Make it your own
Quilt both outer panels, quilt only the front, or skip the quilting. You can change the direction of the lines or create another stitched design.
Add the chain for shoulder carry or leave it off for a clutch. Pair the bag with the Ivy maxi dress or Maxine overalls.
