Multiway Bag
In today’s sewing class, I’ll show you how to sew this practical bag, which you can carry as a tote or wear as a backpack. The pattern comes in two sizes, so you can choose the one that suits you best. It’s very easy!

What you’ll make
Sew a drawstring multiway bag that can be carried by its short tote handle or worn as a backpack using the longer straps.
The pattern offers a roomy maxi version for bulky items and a smaller everyday version. Both are assembled in the same way.

What you’ll learn in this class
- Finish the fabric edges before assembly.
- Create cord openings with eyelets or buttonholes.
- Join the main panels and side pieces.
- Shape the bottom to give the bag depth.
- Make fabric straps or use backpack webbing.
- Position and reinforce both carrying options.
- Form the casing and thread the closing cord.
Fabric and materials
Choose a fabric with enough body to support the bag, such as canvas or faux leather. The sample uses lightweight waterproof canvas.
Use backpack webbing for the handles and straps, or make them from the main fabric or a coordinating fabric. You will also need cord and either eyelets or buttonhole supplies.
Make it your own
Choose the large or small version, or adapt the dimensions. Before securing the straps, try on the bag and adjust their length for comfortable tote and backpack carrying.
Finish the drawstring with a knot or optional end caps. You can also add a cord lock for quicker opening and closing.
