What you’ll make

The Leo is a baby romper with shoulder straps, snap closures, fitted leg bands, and an optional kangaroo pocket across the front.

The pattern covers preemie through 24/36 months. Its simple shape makes a lightweight one-piece outfit, especially when sewn in a comfortable knit.

Explore another one-piece style with the Teddy baby romper.

Pair the Ellis shorts with the sleeveless T-shirt.

Another option is the loose-fit T-shirt with back snaps.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Sew and turn narrow shoulder straps.
  • Attach the facings while securing the straps.
  • Prepare and topstitch the optional kangaroo pocket.
  • Join the side and crotch seams while anchoring the facings.
  • Stretch and attach smaller knit bands to the leg openings.
  • Install snaps and reinforce fine fabric when needed.

Fabric and supplies

A knit is the quickest option. Use a ballpoint or Stretch needle and finish seams with an overlock, an elastic stitch, or the demonstrated straight-stitch and zigzag method.

Woven fabric can also work, but the leg finish must be adapted. The class explains using a band sized to the leg opening with elastic instead of relying on knit recovery.

Make it your own

Leave off the kangaroo pocket or replace it with a small side pocket. Contrast topstitching or a decorative stitch can highlight the pocket edge.

Use snaps at the straps, or substitute buttonholes and buttons. For a very fine knit, add a small fabric reinforcement behind each snap to reduce strain.

Sizing

The included pattern ranges from preemie through 24/36 months.

The class covers the straps, facings, optional pocket, leg bands, and closures, including the adjustments needed when substituting woven fabric.
