What you’ll make

This travel carrier fits over a suitcase’s telescoping handle and secures an additional bag, backpack, jacket, or other item above the suitcase.

Four straps hold the load in place, while a gathered front pocket keeps a water bottle within reach.

What you’ll learn in this class

Create an elastic casing for the bottle pocket.
Shape and topstitch the pocket onto the carrier.
Secure the straps and reinforce stress points.
Assemble and turn the layered base cleanly.
Stitch openings for the telescoping handle.
Thread and finish the straps with buckles.

Fabric and hardware choices

The sample uses structured canvas for the main panel and poplin for the bottle pocket. Use another woven fabric if preferred, adding interfacing when the base needs more body.

The straps can be firm elastic or backpack webbing. The class also discusses choosing a suitable sewing-machine needle for the strap material.

Make it your own

Check the handle openings against the suitcase you plan to use before stitching. The demonstrated openings are 10 cm wide.

Omit the bottle pocket if you do not need it.
Add another pocket or make the existing one in canvas.
Use elastic straps for give or webbing for a firmer hold.
Fix one buckle end or keep both ends adjustable.

Pattern-piece measurements

The rectangular base piece measures 41 cm wide by 26 cm high. The bottle-pocket piece measures 24 cm wide by 27 cm high.
