What you’ll make

Sew dress-up wings in one of two included shapes: butterfly or fairy wings, or dragon or dinosaur wings.

The padded, structured wings attach over the shoulders with elastic straps and snaps. Multiple snap positions can adjust the straps as a child grows.

What you’ll learn in this class

Layer woven fabric with batting and firm interfacing.
Assemble mirrored wing pieces and center seams.
Clip curves, inner corners, and points before turning.
Close the opening while securing the straps.
Use a garment to guide strap and snap placement.
Add quilting and adjustable snap closures.

Fabric and structure

Use manageable woven fabrics such as poplin, quilting cotton, or canvas. Avoid excessively thick fabric because the wings already contain several structural layers.

Lightweight batting adds softness without weighing down the wings. Thick, fairly rigid interfacing helps prevent them from folding.

Make it your own

Use different fabrics on the front and back, then decorate with pom-poms, trim, or fringe. Instead of quilting, try fabric paint, appliqué, or reverse appliqué.

Pattern and sizing

The supplied wing size is intended for children approximately 1 to 5 years old. The pattern can be printed at a larger scale for an older child or adult.

Use a suitable T-shirt as a fitting reference when positioning the straps and snaps, especially if the wearer is not available during construction.

The video class and printable A4 pattern include both the butterfly and dragon wing shapes.
