What you’ll make
Sew a soft dinosaur or dragon crown with a padded headband, fabric spots, painted eyes, non-fraying teeth and a row of dimensional crest spikes.
Hook-and-loop tape adjusts the band around the head. Snaps connect the crest to the back so it stays positioned while the child plays.
Combine it with the dinosaur tail to complete the costume.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Plan the visible placement of the crest, face and decorative spots.
- Fuse fabric appliqués and finish their edges with a narrow zigzag.
- Enclose non-fraying teeth inside a padded headband.
- Sew, clip and turn the crest points cleanly.
- Build the long crest support and attach it through the headband opening.
- Install hook-and-loop tape and correctly oriented snaps for an adjustable fit.
Fabric and materials
Use woven fabric for the band and crest, batting for softness, and fusible interfacing to support the long crest piece.
Fleece, felt or another non-fraying material works for the teeth. Small fabric scraps and permanent fusible web create the spots and eye appliqués.
You will also need a permanent fabric marker, hook-and-loop tape and snaps. The class recommends stitching fused appliqués even when the adhesive is permanent.
Make it your own
Change the colors to turn the same design into a dinosaur or dragon crown. Arrange as many fabric spots as you like, concentrating them on the visible front and sides.
Additional snap positions can make one crown adjustable for siblings or different children. Try the crown on before setting the final snaps whenever possible.
The crest has eight points and pointed ends, while the choice of prints, spots, eye color and tooth material is yours.
Sizing and measurements
The pattern is intended for young children through approximately age 7. Measure the child’s head rather than relying on age alone.
The headband is cut as two fabric pieces measuring 8 × 60 cm, plus matching batting. If necessary, add a few centimeters before cutting.
The hook-and-loop overlap provides some circumference adjustment, while the snaps help position the crest on the headband.
