How is your Christmas decorating coming along? Next week we’ll already be in December, and everything has to be (almost) perfect. A fun and exciting countdown will begin with the advent calendar, and beneath our fabric Christmas tree we’ll already have a beautiful burlap light garland.
How can we keep improving the storybook look our living room is taking on? Today we’re bringing you another idea that’s just as easy, pretty, and inexpensive as the previous ones. We’re going to make Christmas ornaments with yarn and a little glue: you’ll see how amazing they are! It’s an ideal craft to make with the little ones at home, who are the true stars of Christmas.
You’ll only need pretty yarn, which you can find in our shop, and a bottle of white glue, which you can get at any stationery, hardware, or craft store. Plus a few extra things depending on the shape we’re going to make, just to give it form.
We’ve seen two especially interesting Christmas ornaments made with yarn: stars and balls.
HOW TO MAKE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS WITH YARN.
For the stars, we’ll need:
- A surface on which to draw or place the template: the white trays supermarket food comes in are perfect for this.
- Toothpicks or pins to mark the shape.
- Petroleum jelly.
- White glue, mixed with equal parts water.
The process is very easy:
- Use petroleum jelly on the tray so the star won’t stick.
- Prepare the glue-and-water mixture in a bowl.
- Place the template you’re going to use on the tray, turned upside down so it’s easier to work on. Or draw the shape you’re going to make directly with a marker.
- Use the toothpicks or pins to mark the star’s edges.
- Soak the yarn in the glue mixture.
- Wrap it around the toothpicks to give it shape.
- Let it dry completely and remove it from the mold.
We’ve seen two techniques for making the inside of the star. One is to keep crossing the yarn from one toothpick to another, passing it through the inside. The other is simply to place the yarn with your fingers, making circles or other shapes that give it body, as in the image.

With this technique, you can make Christmas ornaments with yarn in whatever shape you like: you’ll just need to place more or fewer toothpicks depending on how complicated the design is.
For the balls, we’ll need:
- A mixture of glue and water.
- Yarn.
- A water balloon.
These are even easier!
- Inflate the balloon to the size you want the balls to be.
- Soak the yarn in the glue-and-water mixture.
- Place it around the balloon, creating a mesh as thick as you want, using one or several colors.
- Let it dry in the air or dry it with a hair dryer.
- Pop the balloon!
We’ve seen that some blogs put a jingle bell inside the balloon before inflating it, while others added glitter to the glue mixture to make sparkly balls.
Your little ones are going to have a wonderful time making these Christmas ornaments with yarn. Little by little, you’ll make Christmas more of a time for creating than for shopping.
