Turban-style headbands have been—and continue to be—an undeniable trend this summer. That’s precisely why, a few weeks ago, we introduced our tutorial for making a turban headband with knit fabric, using a sewing machine (or sewing by hand). If you’re handy with a needle and thread, you probably already have yours: comfortable, very pretty, and perfect for creating a look with your hair down or in an updo.
However, you may not have access to a sewing machine or simply may not be much of a sewer. That’s why, so you still have a chance to make yours before summer slips away, today we’re going to show you a way to make your turban headband without a sewing machine. Very, very easy and for everyone!
How to make a turban headband with fabric glue.
We only recently added fabric glue to our products, but we’ve been looking for ideas where you can use it. The first was the elastic flower crown, and today it’s the turban headband’s turn. The result will be slightly different from what we’d get with a sewing machine, since at the center of the headband, where the fabric strips would cross, we’re going to tie a knot, which changes its appearance a little.
Let’s get started!
1. In this case, you’ll need a rectangular piece of knit fabric (for example, one of the super-beautiful fabrics we have in the store). It should be about 25 cm wide, and you’ll need to calculate the length by adding about 5 cm to the diameter of your head so you can tie the knot.
2. Once you have the rectangle cut, place it with the pretty side of the fabric facing up (this is important because we’ll turn it inside out later).
3. Now you need to fold it in half, from top to bottom, so the strip is doubled, and glue along the open side with the fabric glue. Of course, you shouldn’t cover the entire inside with glue: you only need to apply a thin line along the entire bottom edge of the rectangle. Imagine that you’re sewing it, but instead of using thread, you’re using glue.
4. Let it dry thoroughly for several hours, according to the instructions for the glue you’re using, before continuing with the process.
5. Once it’s completely dry, put your hand inside the tube to turn it right side out, so the pretty side of the fabric is on the outside. You’ll see that it’s joined as if it had a seam on the inside.
6. Now we’re going to tie the knot. The “seam” should be centered on the inside of the headband so it won’t show when you wear it. Try to make the knot look nice because it’s going to be the star of your headband.
Alternative: if you’re not convinced by the knot, you can add a clasp (one that won’t hurt you, of course) or another vertical strip of fabric, gathering the front so it creates the turban effect. You can also glue this small strip with fabric glue.
7. It’s time to close the turban headband with glue as well. Check the measurement against your head again so you know where to glue it. What you’ll do is insert one end inside the other. Do it as if you were sewing, leaving a small hem so it doesn’t look unattractive.
8. Let it dry for quite a while, pressing it with some kind of clip or a heavy object to make sure it stays firmly glued.
And there you have your turban headband! Without a single stitch. Because although we never let the sewing machine stop for a moment, we want to give you every option and make it very easy for you to join in with DIY and start creating.
