Garlands are one of those things we love, both as personal decoration and for celebrating events. The problem is that when it's a garland for a specific event, we can only use it once. Or so we usually think. But did you know you can make garlands to use for every occasion? If you didn't, we'll show you how to make a garland that works for any occasion. That way, you can reuse them as many times as you like by changing the messages.
There are two ways to make them, and both turn out really beautiful.
How to Make a Reusable Garland for Any OccasionIf you're a fabric addict, you may already know about chalkboard fabric. You can write and erase on the fabric as if it were a real chalkboard, so the same garland will work for lots of different occasions. This fabric is very flexible, sturdy, and durable, so you'll have a garland for a long time. But that's not the only way.
Garland with chalkboard fabric
One of the first tutorials we published on our YouTube channel was about decorative garlands. They're very easy to make, but to sew chalkboard fabric, you'll need to change the needle. The reason is that this fabric is thicker. We recommend using a size 90 needle, more or less. It's approximately the same thickness as needles made specifically for denim, so if you have one, it will work perfectly for the chalkboard pennants.
You can find the garland tutorial here and if you want to see how to work with chalkboard fabric, you can also see how in this other tutorial for making a portable chalkboard.
Garland with interchangeable pennants
This second way of making a reusable garland is even more original and more versatile. It not only lets you change the message, but also the number of pennants. That way, you won't have to calculate how to make the message you want to write fit.
The key is that the pennants aren't fixed; instead, you can put them on and take them off thanks to the snaps.
You can find the tutorial for making the interchangeable-pennant garland in Lulu Ferris. You'll see that it's also very easy, and we're sure you'll love the result. It turns out beautifully!
And with just these two little tricks, you already have a whole bunch of garlands in one.
Enjoy them!
