What you’ll make

Sew a reusable chalkboard garland made from individual burlap pennants joined with snaps. Change the message, order, or length whenever the occasion changes.

Two removable end ties let you hang the assembled chain. The straightforward construction makes this an accessible project for a beginner.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Finish loosely woven burlap with zigzag stitching.
  • Attach chalkboard fabric without visible pinholes.
  • Use stitching as a decorative edge finish.
  • Bind each pennant top with bias tape.
  • Orient the snaps so the pennants connect in sequence.
  • Prepare removable end ties for hanging.

Materials and tools

The demonstrated garland uses burlap, chalkboard fabric, bias tape, snaps, and temporary fabric glue. You will also need a setting tool for your chosen snaps.

Temporary glue holds the chalkboard panel while it is stitched. If you use pins instead, keep them near the edge because holes in chalkboard fabric remain visible.

Make it your own

Create as many pennants as you need and rearrange them for different messages. The chalkboard panels allow the writing to change for each occasion.

Draft triangular, semicircular, or other pennant shapes, or alternate background fabrics, bias colors, thread colors, and decorative stitches.

If you change the supplied shape or scale, recalculate the panel and snap placement so the chain still aligns.

The complete class includes a downloadable A4 pattern with pieces for the pennant and chalkboard panel.
