XL Changing Pad
In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to sew a practical, portable XL changing pad with plenty of room for diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and everything else you need!

What you’ll make
Sew a portable XL changing pad with a padded center, fold-in side wings, carrying handles, and several storage pockets.
Mesh pockets keep diapers, a change of clothes, and other essentials visible. A dedicated wipes pocket can be shaped around the package lid for direct access.
The terry changing towel attaches with snaps, so it can be removed and washed without cleaning the whole organizer. Make a second towel to keep a replacement ready.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Reinforce and finish an optional wipes opening.
- Bind mesh and fabric pocket edges with bias tape.
- Build divided pockets into the base and side wings.
- Secure the handles and wings before assembly.
- Turn, press, and close the padded body.
- Finish the terry towel and align its snaps with the base.
Fabric and supplies
The project combines outer fabric, batting, terry cloth, mesh, interfacing, bias tape, backpack webbing, and snaps.
Batting beneath the base adds padding, while the removable terry layer provides a washable surface for changing the baby.
Make it your own
- Skip the wipes opening and make a standard reinforced pocket.
- Add a spare terry towel using the same snap placement.
- Choose straight, zigzag, or decorative stitching for the bound edges.
- Fill the organizer before positioning the closure snaps so they suit its packed depth.
The folded pad fits inside the multi-purpose diaper bag or the Harper Backpack.
Finished size
Open, the changing pad measures approximately 58 cm long by 70 cm wide at the broadest point across the wings.
Folded, it measures approximately 30 cm long by 16 cm wide. If overfilled, it may not close fully.
