What you’ll make

Sew an oversized wearable blanket with a generous hood, long sleeves, and a large kangaroo pocket. The roomy, longline shape is designed for lounging and is available for children and adults.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Handle plush, bulky fabrics with suitable test stitches.
  • Prepare and attach the optional kangaroo pocket.
  • Join the shoulders, set the sleeves flat, and close the side seams.
  • Assemble and attach the hood from the center back to the front.
  • Finish the cuffs with a plain hem, serged edge, or elastic casing.
  • Check and adjust the body length before hemming.

Fabric and supplies

Warm fabrics such as coral fleece, polar fleece, or sherpa suit the blanket version. French terry can create a lighter, oversized sweatshirt.

Plush fabrics may shed and feed differently from one machine to another. Test the stitch length and presser-foot options on scraps before sewing the project.

Make it your own

Omit the pocket for a simpler front, adjust the body length for the wearer, and choose a plain hem, serged finish, or elastic casing for the cuffs.

Use coordinating fabric for the Tokyo Slippers or boot-style slippers to make a matching lounge set.

Sizes

Kids’ patterns span ages 3 to 14. Adult patterns span sizes 34 to 56, grouped as 34/36/38, 40/42/44, 46/48/50, and 52/54/56.

The class includes separate kids’ and adult pattern files in home-printable A4 and copy-shop A0 formats.
