What you’ll make
Sew loose women’s shorts with hip pockets and an elastic waist. Their wide legs resemble a skirt when made in lightweight fabric with fluid drape.
The Valencia Shorts combine a clean front with practical pockets. A separate folded waistband encloses the elastic for a comfortable fit.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored garment and pocket pieces.
- Build the hip pockets.
- Join the legs and curved rise.
- Construct and attach the waistband casing.
- Insert and secure waistband elastic.
- Finish seams and hems with or without a serger.
Fabric and supplies
Choose a lightweight woven fabric with drape. The class uses a yarn-dyed cotton, while crepe and viscose create a more fluid, skirt-like effect.
You’ll also need waistband elastic. A serger and twin needle are optional because the class discusses zigzag, overcasting and standard topstitching alternatives.
Make it your own
Add parallel pocket and hem topstitching with a twin needle, or use a regular stitch. A softer fabric creates more movement, while a crisper fabric gives the shorts more structure.
Pair them with a top adapted from the long summer dress, the blouse version of the Izzie Dress or the basic tank top.
Sizing
The pattern covers 38/40, 42/44, 46/48, 50/52 and 54/56. Use the included waist and hip measurement chart to choose your size.
The video covers pockets, waistband construction and machine-finishing options. The downloadable pattern includes a measurement chart.
