What you’ll make
Sew a roomy turtleneck sweater with a relaxed silhouette and folded collar. Its loose shape leaves space for layering underneath.
Make it in sweatshirt knit for a casual version or choose a warm, wool-look sweater fabric for a different finish.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the front, back, collar and waistband on grain and fold lines.
- Sew knits with a ballpoint needle and walking foot.
- Finish seams with straight stitch and zigzag or a serger.
- Quarter and distribute the folded collar evenly.
- Stretch a flexible waistband or gather the sweater for a firmer band.
- Finish the sleeves with simple hems.
The gathering method also appears in the chef hat tutorial.
Fabric and supplies
Use a suitable sweater fabric, such as sweatshirt knit or a warm wool-look fabric. A ballpoint needle helps protect knit fibers, while a walking foot feeds the layers evenly.
Make it your own
- Choose a relaxed waistband or one fitted at the hips.
- Omit the waistband, lengthen the body and add a hem.
- Adjust the body width, garment length or sleeve length.
