What you’ll make
Make a playful children’s chef hat with a full gathered crown, a structured forehead band and an adjustable hook-and-loop closure.
It can complete a cooking outfit, costume or pretend restaurant. The gathered seam is neatly finished inside for greater comfort.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Apply interfacing and prepare the structured band.
- Shape the crown and sew gathering stitches.
- Gather the crown evenly to fit the band.
- Use reference points to distribute the fullness.
- Sew through the gathered, layered seam.
- Finish the inside with bias tape, a serger or a zigzag stitch.
- Sew the hook-and-loop closure securely.
Fabric and supplies
Use fabric for the crown and band, fusible interfacing for structure, bias tape for the inside finish and sew-on hook-and-loop tape for the adjustable closure.
The crown can be cut from a fat quarter. The class also explains how to position a directional print correctly at the front.
Make it your own
Mix coordinating or contrasting fabrics, vary the crown’s rounded shape or personalize the hat with a name appliqué.

Sizing
The supplied measurements are intended for children approximately 3–10 years old. The finished hat has an approximate head circumference of 53 cm.
The overlapping band and hook-and-loop closure let you tighten the fit for a smaller head.
